Finding What Works for Your Family

In today’s world, there is so much competing advice from experts, experienced parents, and well-meaning friends. At times, this can be overwhelming for new parents who are still unsure and learning as they go. But never fear, there is a trick to navigating all this advice. You have to do what feels right for you and your family. Additionally, you are the guide to your children as they grow in their ever-changing world.

We appreciated all the advice offered, especially the tips and recommendations from our doctor. From our first baby to our fourth baby, even many of the doctor’s recommendations changed completely. If medical experts can do a complete flip on caring for a baby, there must be many great ways to raise your own child. As you carry your beautiful new bundle of joy through your doors, collect all the advice you can, then love your little one the way that feels right to you. Only you (and maybe your partner) can decide what is best for your children.

Settling in At Home

Give yourself grace these first few weeks you arrive home with a newborn. This is true no matter which number child you are bringing home. In the beginning, your main focus will be on meeting your newborn’s needs. If you happen to have older children, they will be enough to keep you busy without all the other household work to consider. Be sure to check out our post on welcoming a new baby with older children.

Be sure to take time for yourself too! Find time to rest, time to eat, and even time to relax. This can be tricky if your spouse is back to work and you have more than one children, but there are ways. Even if you need to sneak it after putting the kids to bed early or call in extra help.

Take out your calendar. Then mark a star two months from the day you first come home. These first two months are your bonding time with your baby. Time to allow pets and older siblings to bond too! Everything else can wait. And even after those first two months, know that you may have times when life just becomes too much. Allow yourself to take a week or two from household obligations as you need. No one can do everything, no matter what it seems.
