Free Writing Templates
My children love to fill notebooks with stories, pictures, articles, and their opinions. To begin, we spend a few minutes talking about what they want to write about, and then they get started writing. It’s a wonderful process and they have really taken to wanting to write. Since my children are enrolled in a dual language program, we spend time in the morning writing in English and time in the afternoon writing in Spanish. Most importantly, Google Translate is our friend.
Yet, for many children, a blank piece of paper or a cursor on a white screen overwhelms them. Sometimes getting a few fun writing tools can help too. For example, my children love special pencils, pens, and paper. If you find your child needs a little guidance to get them writing, try these ideas below.
Who Would Win? Writing
The Who Would Win? series are taking over so much of my son’s reading time. He just loves them. He also loves to create his own animals, monsters, heroes. Why not pair his two loves and let him create his own “short” who would win stories. Moreover, feel free to let your child imagine their own creatures or use real world creatures and research them. Then, trade these stories with a friend and enjoy reading a Who Would Win? mini story.
The Who Would Win? planning and writing sheets provide a brainstorming sheet. First, your child creates their creature and statistics about their creature OR researches two real animals they would like to see battle. Next, pair this with asking your child to draw pictures of the animals as well.
Second, your child imagines the battle between the two creatures. Ask your child to draw out the battle. Meanwhile, they write sentences to support the pictures. At the end, they can declare the winner and either draw or write about the victory. You can get a copy from my store for FREE by clicking here.
Comic or Graphic Novel
My children cannot seem to get enough of reading comics and graphic novels. These enter our house and get passed around between all the children. On the comic worksheet, your child can create their own comic by drawing pictures and writing to describe their actions. And of course, these can be shared with friends to encourage even more reading.
You receive one general outline page for creating a comic. However, feel free to add as many extra pages as your child needs to finish their comic. Of course, any empty boxes leftover are just fine too! Click here to get a FREE copy of the comic worksheet from my store.
Invention
My children also love creating inventions of their own design. To encourage the little inventors in the world, try out the invention planning guide. Begin by using the guide to brainstorm an invention as well as draw a picture. On the other hand, if your child prefers research, this guide helps guide their research of a real life invention.
The second page of the planning guide provides a place for pictures and descriptions. Children can use this page in multiple ways. For example, they can draw and write about how they created the invention, how the invention works, or even make up a funny story using the invention.
In conclusion, feel free to have them try out more than one and use the same page for multiple writing experiences. For your FREE copy, click here to visit my store and download the Invention Planning Guide.

Great tips! I used to be a professor of English education, and my student teachers used many of your suggested writing tasks, for example graphic novels. We designed storyboards online, too.
Thank you! We love anything that gets our children writing and find when we make it a habit, our children start to enjoy writing.
